Sensor-rich fusion, GAN-sourced training sets, sub-5 W neural accelerators, cached global maps and zero-trust update rails are converging into an end-to-end cure for the four big ATR pain points. Early adopters such as Cinder, OMNInav swarms and Puma VNS show that five-metre geolocation without GPS is an achievable baseline for mass-market drones entering FY 26 doctrine.

Outlook

The next 24-36 months will hard-code visual ATR and camera-based navigation into Western doctrine: U.S. FY-25 research lines already direct new spending toward “vision-based navigation and map-matching” under DARPA’s PNT portfolio (Office of the Under Secretary of Defense), while the Defense Science Board calls these technologies a baseline requirement on par with SATCOM by 2026 (Defense Science Board). Data velocity is set to accelerate. Allied procurement is already shifting. Bottom line: by FY-27, five-metre CEP without satellites will be the new floor for drones, artillery seekers and autonomous vehicles, enabled by fusion sensors, low-power AI chips, sovereign 3-D map clouds and rapid, secure model pipelines. Forces that fail to integrate these layers risk tactical blindness the first time an adversary turns on a jammer.
